How a Whitsundays Reef Day Works

Reef and beach in a single run from Coral Sea Marina.

  1. Board at Coral Sea Marina

Meet at Meeting Point B by the roundabout, Coral Sea Marina North, at 7:40am. The speedboats are fast and the schedule is tight — this is not a departure to arrive late for.

  2. Out to Bait Reef

The outer reef here is about 90 minutes out. Snorkelling is at Bait Reef Lagoon or Stepping Stones, off the back of the boat, with gear, stinger suits and flotation devices provided.

  3. Whitehaven Beach

Seven kilometres of silica sand at the southern end, with free time to swim and walk. Lunch and afternoon snacks are served here or on board.

  4. Hill Inlet Lookout

A graded-moderate bushwalk with many stone steps up to the view over the swirling sand of Hill Inlet. Comfortable shoes matter more than people expect.

Four Ways to See the Great Barrier Reef

Every reef trip sells the same destination. What actually separates them is how long you are in the water, and what happens if you would rather not be.

Reef and Beach

The Whitsundays Does Something Cairns Cannot

Same reef, 600 kilometres south, and an entirely different day out.

The Whitsundays sit about 600 kilometres south of Cairns, and they offer the one thing the northern gateways cannot: a day that combines the outer Great Barrier Reef with Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet lookout. In Cairns you choose reef or rainforest. Here you get reef and the best beach in the country in the same eight hours.

The vessel is the defining difference. Airlie Beach day trips run jet speedboats rather than large catamarans, which makes the distances workable but also makes the day physical. Children must be over 130cm to ride — and the operator will not refund a child found too short within 24 hours of departure, which is a harsh rule worth reading twice if you are travelling with kids.

Snorkelling here is what operators call wild snorkelling: off the back of the boat, on the outer reef, with no platform, no infrastructure and nothing to stand on. You must be able to swim, and the captain can and does keep weak swimmers out of the water. Bait Reef Lagoon and Stepping Stones are the usual sites, both genuine outer-reef coral rather than fringing reef.

The other Whitsundays speciality is the air. Heart Reef — the natural coral formation in the Hardy Reef complex — cannot be visited by boat and is only seen from a scenic flight, and the Airlie Beach flights covering it are among the most-reviewed activities on this whole coast. If the reef-from-above idea appeals, this is where it is strongest.

Two things to weigh. The bushwalk to Hill Inlet is graded moderate with a long flight of stone steps, and it is the part of the day people most often underestimate. And the Whitsundays are further from the outer reef than Port Douglas, so a reef-only day here gives you less water time than a northern boat would. Come for the combination, not for maximum snorkelling.

Susan Australia

"I had a wonderful day and found the whole experience fantastic. Food provided was outstanding, the scenery and inclusions were above expectations. I am a decent swimmer but have a huge fear of the ocean and the team helped me to have an amazing experience snorkelling the reef. I would do this again without a doubt."

Darlene Australia

"Probably the single most amazing trip I’ve ever done ! Incredible value for money, staff were amazing ! Free buffet included ! The reef was life changing the Whitsundays is to die for & cruising around on a big speedboat to each location made the trip even better. couldn’t recommend more !!"

"Vance was a truly professional and knowledgeable guide, who is also entertaining thanks to his friendliness and amusing anecdotes, as well as being an excellent driver… exceptional! Thank you!"

tamara Italy

"Tour was great. We had a lot or fun. Tour guides were friendly and helpful. Just keep in mind that it’s not guaranteed that they will be able to take you out the outer great barrier reef as all depends on the currents. Still a lot of fun. Must be of moderate fitness to get in and out of the rubber boat, as the boat cannot reach the island and they transfer you to a smaller rubber boat to get to the islands."
