Cairns has far more departures, the widest price range and the cheapest fares. Port Douglas is about an hour closer to the outer ribbon reefs, so boats there reach clearer water sooner and the operators tend to run smaller vessels. This is the number that separates the trips, and it is rarely on the booking page. A full-day outer reef boat gives three to five hours across two or three sites. A platform day gives about 3.5 hours at one permanent mooring. A half-day trip gives about 90 minutes at a single reef. The day length tells you almost nothing — an eight-hour tour can include three hours of steaming.

Small-boat trips are the opposite: Wavelength requires you to swim 50 metres unaided, and the half-day fast boats list non-swimmers as unsuitable.

No. Introductory dives need no experience and no certification — an instructor is in the water with you throughout. The minimum age for scuba in Queensland is 12, you complete a medical questionnaire on the day, and anyone over 65 or on medication for asthma, heart disease or diabetes needs a doctor's clearance letter. You cannot fly within 24 hours of diving, which matters if you are leaving Cairns the next morning.

June to October is the dry season: calmer seas, better visibility, lower humidity, and whale season from July. The reef is 2,300 kilometres long and its condition varies enormously site to site. Sometimes, and they are easy to miss. Several Cairns and Port Douglas operators collect a fuel surcharge at check-in — typically A$10 per adult and A$5 per child — which is not in the online price.
