Distance: real, but overstated
Port Douglas sits about 65km north of Cairns and closer to the outer ribbon reefs. That is a genuine advantage — less steaming, more reef time for the same day length — but the gap is more like twenty to thirty minutes each way than the hour the brochures imply, because Cairns boats have got faster.
What the northern position does change is which reefs you reach. Port Douglas boats work the Agincourt ribbon reefs, a chain sitting right on the edge of the continental shelf where deep ocean water meets the reef wall. Ribbon reefs are structurally different from the platform reefs off Cairns: steeper drop-offs, better visibility on average, and coral walls rather than coral gardens.
