Airlie Beach Reef Tours: Pontoon, Jet Boat, Flight or Sail
Great Barrier Reef tours from Airlie Beach compared: the Hardy Reef pontoon day, the Bait Reef and Whitehaven jet boat, Heart Reef flights and overnight sailing trips.
Great Barrier Reef tours from Airlie Beach come in four main formats: a full day at a pontoon moored on Hardy Reef, a jet boat that pairs a Bait Reef snorkel with Whitehaven Beach, a one-hour flight over Heart Reef, and sailing trips through the Whitsunday Islands. Every listing calls itself a reef tour, yet they give you very different days.
Decide first what you most want from the trip: time in the water on the outer reef, the islands and Whitehaven Beach, the view from the air, or a night on the water. Once you know that, most of the comparison is done.

Full-day outer Great Barrier Reef trips
The main outer-reef day from Airlie Beach is Cruise Whitsundays’ trip to Hardy Reef, about 39 nautical miles offshore. The Hardy Reef pontoon cruise costs from $189 and holds 4.6/5 from 378 reviews. Check-in is at the Maritime Terminal at the Port of Airlie.
The operator reopened its Heart Pontoon at Hardy Reef to day guests in July 2026 after a refit, with about four hours at the reef. From 20 July 2026 its older Reefworld pontoon takes overnight guests only. The GetYourGuide listing text still names Reefworld, so look at your confirmation for the pontoon you are booked on.
The day ticket includes snorkelling gear, a guided semi-submersible tour, the underwater observatory, a buffet lunch and morning and afternoon tea. Scuba diving and guided snorkelling cost extra. This is the trip to book when the outer reef matters more to you than Whitehaven Beach, and it suits mixed groups because non-swimmers can see coral from the semi-submersible and observatory.
Expect a long day. Airlie Beach sits on the mainland behind the Whitsunday Islands, so the boat crosses the island passages before it reaches open water. If you get seasick, take medication before boarding and sit low and central on the way out.
Whitsundays snorkelling tours
Fast boats, sailing yachts and catamarans visit bays and fringing reefs around the Whitsunday Islands, and many combine snorkelling with Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. These can be excellent days, but they are a different trip from an outer-reef pontoon.
The Bait Reef and Whitehaven jet boat ($239, 4.6/5 from 348 reviews) is the one that does both. It snorkels Bait Reef Lagoon or Stepping Stones, off the back of the boat on the outer reef, then stops at Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet lookout in eight hours. Children must be over 130cm, and you need to be a confident swimmer because there is no platform to stand on.
The adults-only Lady Enid sail ($204, 4.7/5 from 132 reviews) is slower: Whitehaven Beach, a snorkel stop in the islands, meals and sparkling wine on board. Choose an island day if beaches, lookouts and varied stops are on your list. Choose the outer reef if coral is the main goal. When you compare listings, look for named snorkel sites or a clear statement of where the boat goes.
Heart Reef scenic flights
Heart Reef is a heart-shaped coral formation in the Hardy Reef area, and you can only see its shape from the air. Boats do not visit it and swimming there is not allowed. Fixed-wing and helicopter flights leave from airstrips near Airlie Beach and from Hamilton Island, and most routes add Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet.
Three Airlie flights on GetYourGuide include a window seat for every passenger:
- Whitsundays & Great Barrier Reef Scenic Flight, $214, 4.8/5 from 2,371 reviews. Hotel pickup, or meet at Laguna Quays Airport, south of Airlie.
- Whitsundays & Heart Reef Scenic Flight, $255, 4.9/5 from 1,769 reviews. A 60-minute flight with hotel pickup from an airstrip closer to town, so the transfer is shorter.
- Whitsunday Islands & Heart Reef Scenic Flight, $250, 4.9/5 from 1,597 reviews. A 60-minute high-wing flight with a courtesy bus from two Airlie stops.
The cheapest one has the most reviews; the $255 flight saves time on the road. Check the weight limit before you book: 130kg per person on the $214 and $250 flights and 125kg on the $255 flight. A flight does not land at Heart Reef, and the route can change with weather and air-traffic control.
Overnight reef experiences
A night on the water gives you the reef after the day boats have gone home: changing light, stars and quiet anchorages. Cruise Whitsundays sells its overnight pontoon stays direct, and they are not bookable on GetYourGuide.
The overnight option you can book here is the 2-day, 2-night Mandrake sail ($382, 4.6/5 from 42 reviews). It sleeps 12 guests in share-single bunks and doubles, includes all meals, snorkel gear and stinger suits, and can call at Whitehaven Beach, Hook Island and Blue Pearl Bay. It snorkels island reefs rather than the outer reef. Check the cabin type, bathroom arrangement, luggage allowance and the weather policy before you pay.
Is Airlie Beach good for scuba diving?
It works for a first dive or one fun dive, less well for a dive-focused trip. The Hardy Reef pontoon day sells introductory and certified dives as add-ons, and that is the only Airlie diving we found on GetYourGuide. If diving is the point of your trip, Cairns has dedicated dive boats and liveaboards: see Great Barrier Reef scuba diving from Cairns.
First-time divers fill in a medical questionnaire, and some conditions need a doctor’s sign-off. Certified divers should carry their card and logbook, since operators can ask about recent dives. Book dive places when you book the cruise, because each boat takes far fewer divers than passengers.
How Airlie Beach compares with Cairns and Port Douglas
Airlie Beach is the base for combining the reef with Whitsunday scenery, island days and Heart Reef flights. Cairns has the widest range of outer-reef boats and dive trips. Port Douglas boats run to Agincourt Reef and Low Isles.

What to check before booking
- Does the trip go to the outer reef, island fringing reef or both?
- Does it stop at Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet lookout, or only fly over them?
- How many hours are spent travelling and how many at each stop?
- Are snorkelling gear, stinger suits and flotation included?
- Is diving available, and what medical screening applies?
- Does the fare include the reef tax and port charges?
- Does it leave from the Port of Airlie, Coral Sea Marina or an airport?
- What happens if wind or visibility changes the route?
Frequently asked questions
Can you visit the Great Barrier Reef in a day from Airlie Beach?
Yes. The Hardy Reef pontoon cruise and the Bait Reef jet boat both reach the outer reef and return the same day, and a flight shows it from above in about an hour. An island day may include coral, but do not assume it reaches the outer reef.
Can I see Heart Reef by boat?
No. Heart Reef’s shape only shows from the air, and boats do not visit it. A pontoon day at Hardy Reef puts you in the same reef system without the heart-shaped view.
Is a scenic flight or boat tour better?
Choose a flight for scale, photographs and a short itinerary. Choose a boat for snorkelling, diving and seeing coral up close. If you have two days and the budget, book both: the flights take about an hour and leave several times a day.
Are Airlie Beach reef tours suitable for children?
Many are, but a long day and hours on the boat can tire young children. The jet boat needs children over 130cm; the pontoon day suits families better because of its observatory and semi-submersible. For a short outing without swimming, the Airlie Beach glass-bottom boat ($71, 4.2/5 from 271 reviews) stays close to town. Check minimum ages, child-size gear and shade before you book.
Booking recommendation
Book the Hardy Reef pontoon when the outer reef matters most. Book the Bait Reef and Whitehaven jet boat if you can swim well and want the beach in the same day, or a sailing day when the islands matter more than the coral. For Heart Reef, take a flight, and check the route on the listing because the tour photograph may not match it.
Inclusions, prices and ratings come from the operators’ current GetYourGuide listings; the Heart Pontoon and Reefworld changes come from Cruise Whitsundays’ July 2026 announcements. See all Whitsundays reef tours.
