Cairns has far more departures, the widest price range and the cheapest fares. Port Douglas is about an hour closer to the outer ribbon reefs, so boats there reach clearer water sooner and the operators tend to run smaller vessels. A platform day gives about 3.5 hours at one permanent mooring. A half-day trip gives about 90 minutes at a single reef. No. Introductory dives need no experience and no certification — an instructor is in the water with you throughout. The minimum age for scuba in Queensland is 12, you complete a medical questionnaire on the day, and anyone over 65 or on medication for asthma, heart disease or diabetes needs a doctor's clearance letter. You cannot fly within 24 hours of diving, which matters if you are leaving Cairns the next morning.

June to October is the dry season: calmer seas, better visibility, lower humidity, and whale season from July.
